Look Slimmer Without Diet or Exercise
We’re bringing back an older post that’s an oldie, but a goodie. Our hope is that by republishing older content, you’ll glean inspiration or find new information you may have missed!
Before I dive into these tips, I want to clarify that nobody NEEDS to look slimmer! Own your body, rock it with confidence, and love yourself! These tips are just for those days you might want to look a little slimmer or taller and feel more confident. Because let’s face it, even if you have the “perfect” hourglass figure, you still have those days when you’re just not feeling great. By the way, if you don’t know your body shape, make sure you check out this post where I walk you through how to take your measurement to determine your body shape.
You’ll see some before and after pictures below. There is nothing wrong with the before shots…these are all my clothes, and I wear them all! I’m just trying to show an example. You can watch the video on this topic below or here.
If you’re interested in more style tips and tweaks, make sure you check out this post next! Plus, we’ve shared tips on how to look slimmer in a dress, some chic slimming tops, and petite styling tips (even if you’re not petite!).
Style Tricks How To Instantly Look Slimmer
Things That Make You Look Slimmer
#1 | Dark Wash Jeans
One of the most powerful ways to look slimmer is to wear dark-wash jeans. Light-wash jeans are great! But dark wash jeans will be more elongating and slimming. Also try to avoid jeans with whiskering, fading, etc.

#2 | High Rise Jeans
Wearing high-rise or high-waisted jeans can help hide a little extra something in the middle, often referred to as the muffin top. You can see that the low-rise jeans create a lump on the left. My tummy area doesn’t look as smooth. Wearing pants/jeans with a higher rise will keep everything sucked in, smooth out lumps and bumps, and make you feel more secure. Even if you don’t have a tummy, high-rise jeans will make your legs look thinner, longer, and smooth skin. When shopping for high-rise jeans, look for at least a 9” rise. On the flip side of this, if you do have a tummy, sometimes wearing high-rise jeans can accentuate that area, which is why it’s so important to know how to dress your body.

#3 | Cinch It
Add a belt! Accentuate your waist. You can see that this pretty dress has a lot of volume and doesn’t give me a shape. When I add the belt, it creates more of a waist and makes the dress much more flattering. So simple!

#4 | Flare Jeans
Next, the power of flared jeans…they will make you look SO much taller, longer, leaner, and slimmer. It’s like a magic trick! Skinny jeans were very “in” for a while, but I love that flares and wide-leg pants/jeans are back in style because they’re so flattering! They are particularly flattering for women with bigger hips, butt, and thighs.

#5 | Wear Heels
This is an obvious one, but worth repeating. You can see the difference in the photo above. I look much taller and longer on the right where I’m wearing high heels. Another tip…avoid wearing shoes with ankle straps to make your legs look longer! And for the most elongating and slimming effect, wear heels that are similar to your skin tone and have a pointed toe.
#6 | Pointed Toe Shoes
Which brings me to my next tip… pointed-toe shoes create the illusion of more length. When you pair it with similar-colored pants or dresses, you look even longer! You can look at the flared jeans picture above as an example. The dark shoes paired with the dark-colored jeans become an extension of your legs.
#7 | Wear Solids
Don’t get me wrong…I love beautiful prints. But if you want to look longer and slimmer, wear solid colors. You can see in the photo above that the black pencil skirt is much more elongating and flattering than the printed skirt on the left. If you are wearing prints, be aware of what part of your body you’re wearing the print on. Prints add volume, so if you’re a Triangle body shape and want to minimize your lower body, it’s best to avoid prints on your lower half (and vice versa).
#8 | Wear V-Necks
Next, it’s better to wear a v-neck versus a crewneck. A crewneck is a beautiful neckline but it’s not as elongating and will make a bustier woman look bigger on top. So if the goal is to minimize the bust and look like you have a longer torso, wear a v-neck!
Shop v-necks here.
#9 | Vertical Stripes
Vertical stripes, like the classic menswear-inspired pinstripes print, are perfect for creating a long, lean line. If you don’t like the pinstripe print, try jeans with just one racing stripe down the side. They create a similar effect too.
#10 | Jewelry
The last tip is to be strategic with jewelry. Long necklaces like a long pendant necklace have the power to elongate in the same way a v-neck does. It’s a simple way to add length to the upper body. Remember that wherever you place your jewelry, is where the eyes will go. If you want to call attention to your face, for example, wear a pretty collar necklace or drop earrings.

How To Appear Slimmer Bonus Tips
- Contouring – If you’re worried about a puffy face, try contouring! It’ll make a rounder face look more defined and trim. I share some contouring tips here.
- Vanishing Back Bra – I highly recommend having a bra that eliminates back fat. I did a post on the best bra from Soma here. The way it’s made keeps everything really nice and smooth in the back.
- Shapewear – Shapewear can be a lifesaver!! I highly recommend investing in some shapewear you love. It’ll smooth everything out and make you look like you’ve lost 5-10 pounds in seconds! Make sure you also read this post with tips on finding the best undergarments.
What Colors Make You Look Slimmer
I love to wear bright pops of color but…always try to avoid wearing bright colors or light colors when trying to look slimmer. Instead, wear darker colors like…
- Black
- Navy blue
- Dark brown
- Charcoal gray
- Dark purple
- Head-to-toe dark colors…a.k.a a monochromatic look!

Aww thanks, friend! xo
Your style is flawless. I can only dream. And I can only dream of being thin like you. I know your petite, I’m only 5’2 and it’s so hard to look thin. 5 lbs looks like 15 lbs extra on my frame, add that, menopause, age, and stress (cordisol) and I’m a blowfish. I wish I could “_own” it. But I always thought I’d be small, I was 120 up until my 40. Then lbs started creeping ON, eating keto, intermittent fast, one meal a day, bullet proof coffee. And nothing works. So dressing use to be fun, now I dread it. You look gorgeous in everything. I love THAT maxi orange dress you showed a while back. And the red sexy jumpsuit. Keep rocking it! I sure would????
