Three Simple Ways to Update Your Fall Makeup Routine
Let’s face it (pun intended), the beauty industry doesn’t really consider a “regular” woman when they announce a season’s new makeup trends. Typically, the makeup trends favor the bold and risk-taking. This fall’s makeup trends are no different. So, while fall 2023 runways are featuring bold and edgy looks, we’ll probably be sitting out most of them. Sorry metallic lips and daring graphic eyeliner…you just aren’t for us! BUT…if there’s a fun, new makeup trend you’re interested in try…do it!
Check out some of the recent TikTok makeup trends Erin’s tried and loves here. Plus, even more beauty posts here.
Fall Makeup Routine Ideas & Trends
Thankfully, there are a few simple ways to update your fall makeup routine that are aligned with the fall trends. For example, makeup is expected to be dialed back to a softer, more ethereal vibe. Lips, on the other hand, will most likely be punched up with bold hues and matte finishes. But you don’t have to be so precise in your application. We’ve created a handy list to refer to for the coolest—and most wearable—fall makeup trends to try when sweater weather comes around.

Less is More Foundation
One specific makeup trend this fall that is particularly appealing to me, and very over-40-friendly, is the move toward natural-looking skin. Finally! Set aside your matte, full-coverage foundations and thick concealers, if you haven’t already, and switch to skin tints and sheer, lightweight formulas for your base makeup. Fall is usually associated with layering, but this season, we’re keeping it lighter and fresher. I love this trend because it allows you to embrace your skin instead of hiding it under all that coverage. And let’s be honest—it’s about time we stop acting like pores don’t exist. To get that natural skin-like finish that complements your natural complexion, check out some of my lightweight faves!
The bright, sunburnt blush trend that took over cheeks this summer evolves into “burnt blush” for fall. This trend is fairly easy to achieve because it’s more about the color, rather than looking like you’re not wearing enough SPF. To ace this makeup look, you’ll want to pick out blushes in terracotta, brick, and peachy hues instead of the popular summer tangerine and rose shades. Think more about the changing colors of leaves rather than fresh flowers and fruit. For the burnt blush effect, add your blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend across the bridge of your nose and under your eyes. This placement brings a little warmth and color to your complexion—perfect for fall.
This fall, it’s all about browns and reds! You may have heard of the “spiced latte makeup” on TikTok that’s completely inspired by you guessed it, pumpkin spice lattes! It’s all about creating a warm, brown-toned monochromatic makeup look with different (but complementary) brown shades. Another big fall color trend in fashion AND makeup is red. All shades of red, including burgundy, are IN! The easiest way to pull this off is with a beautiful bold lip.
Don’t worry ladies, a bold lip with lip liner will never go out of style! But some days call for a low-maintenance and effortless pop of color. That’s where the blurred lips trend literally shines. In line with the low-maintenance foundation and burnt blush trends—not-so-precise lips are a fun alternative. I recommend applying the lip color with a fluffy eyeshadow blending brush to nail this look. You can easily build sheer layers of color to create a lasting stain and control the level of pigment desired.
Cream everything is the preferred makeup consistency for fall. The comeback of cream products is most likely because dewy skin is in. Nothing truly brings out that glowing sheen to your complexion like a cream blush, bronzer, and highlighter. Plus, cream products play very nicely with the less-is-more foundation trend. So, if you haven’t already added cream products to your collection, let me help you out with some of these gorgeous suggestions!
